Mikaela can be incredibly selfish and only seems to think of herself but when she's sober she does have some redeeming qualities. She could do better if she tries to stay sober but she just doesn't have the willpower for it.

Kaela's never been a good mother but she didn't exactly have a good example to follow. Her mother was a stripper and doesn't even know who her father is. She was raised in a home where they were barely making ends meet. There was always men, alcohol and drugs around and Kaela was sexually abused when she was younger and started prostituting at the age of 14.

She left home and travelled for a while. Where she met a man at college. She told him she was 18 but that was a lie. She got pregnant and had his baby when she was 16 but half the time, she wasn't even sure who the baby's father was. She raised him as best she could.. which was pretty badly. It was poor effort and the boy was incredibly neglected, had to learn to care for himself and a useless alcoholic mother as well as deal with her many, many boyfriends and random men she would bring home.

She never saw the abuse or if she did, she ignored it. Her son was later sent away which was probably better for him but after a year she took him back and wanted to try to be better but he just ended up taking care of her and doing everything. He left again and it was okay but then she got a call about him being in the hospital and Mikaela's firstr thought was money and not she son's health. She later sobered up for the briefest moment (only because she ran out of alcohol and needed to go get more) and it hit that her son was in the hospital.

He had been abused before and she ignored it. She had taken him to hospitals before but she was always drunk and didn't care. This time was different though. She managed to find her way there and tried to at least stay sober and maybe kick the habit once and for all but it's not easy.
