WHERE WAS I WHEN THE ROCKETS CAME TO LIFEAND CARRIED YOU AWAY INTO THE ALLIGATOR SKY?EVEN THOUGH I'LL NEVER KNOW WHATS UP AHEADI'M NEVER LETTIN' GO, I'M NEVER LETTIN' GO After spending seven years in a room that could barely hold three people, which really was all it was ever meant to hold, Topher had become quite fond of the outdoors. Small, confined places freaked Topher out quite a bit. He didn’t like thinking that he could be trapped anywhere ever again and the smaller a place was the more he thought that he was going to be stuck there forever without a way to get out. That’s why when Topher got home he didn’t like going in the bedroom that used to be his; he preferred the couch to the smaller room, which was his bedroom.
His dislike of enclosed spaces led Topher to enjoy the outdoors in an odd way. He had gone seven years without seeing a cloud, the sun, grass, or trees. He had gone seven years without feeling wind or rain or sunshine. He had gone seven years only knowing the four walls around him and only feeling the pain that was inflicted upon him in that room. For hours Topher could sit in the same spot in the grass in the backyard of his house and just stare. He would just marvel in everything and find the smallest things fascinating.
Topher didn’t like staying in his room at Hawthorne as much as he didn’t like staying in his room back at home. The problem was that at Hawthorne there were so many people and he wasn’t really sure where he should be and what to do when he was near so many people. He didn’t like sitting in the student lounge because he wasn’t sure what he was supposed to do, grant it Topher did like being near people because they were was interesting as they were confusing. The best place to be was outside in Topher’s mind, so of course when he didn’t have anything to do and didn’t want to sit in his room Topher decided to go on outside.
Even if it wasn’t a nice day like it was Topher still probably would’ve sat outside. One time back at home it was pouring rain and Topher just sat out there in the grass. When his mom realized he was sitting out there in the rain for nearly an hour she ran out frantic and pulled her dripping wet and muddy son back into the house. Teeth chattering and his entire body shaking his mom sent him to clean up and then made him a cup of hot chocolate then gave him a lecture about how he was allowed outside, but he couldn’t sit out in the rain or, god forbid, the snow. Topher said he wouldn’t sit out in the rain again, but he didn’t see anything wrong with sitting out there. Everybody wanted him to feel something and when he was out in the rain he felt cold and wet… he was feeling right? It was that same mentality that led to the cuts on his wrist, he just wanted to feel like everybody else wanted him to.
Walking outside Topher moved to the courtyard where he sat down the grass and did… well nothing. He was sitting there for almost an hour just looking at the sky or looking at the grass, touching the ground and feeling the wind in his hair. Most people would think he’s nuts sitting outside alone for how long he was, but good thing this was a school full of loons, which meant Topher looked like he was right at home.

this school was something different for the young abigale rose dennis. everyone here was either so nice to her, or they were really mean. i guess it just all depended on what they were here for. everyone here counted her as a child, because of how she acted. she would always fight about it, but in the end... they were right. she was just like a child; innocent, sweet, just wanting to have fun. innocent fun, something that always involved things like coloring or playing dress up. some people acted as if that was a bad thing, but she didn't care. this was helping her get through the abandonment that she felt when her parents sent her here.
abi's problem was not even a problem, compared to others when she talked to others. when she heard their stories, or what they were here for, she felt as if she didn't belong. maybe, that's because she didn't. she only had add, not anything like another personality, or being suicidal. she just.. she was hyperactive, easily distracted. hardly any reason to be sent to a school for troubled teens, right? her mother didn't think so, she thought that it needed to be dealt with properly, and she just didn't have the time to do that. abi didn't really care, she kind of liked it here.
it was tiring, though, just sitting in her room, coloring, all by herself. she wanted someone to play with her, someone who would talk to her and do the same things that she did. sure, some people here did that, but she could tell they thought it was childish or boring. with a drawn out sigh, she picked herself up off the floor of her dorm and looked out the window. it was a nice day, she should do something rather than stay in her room all day and color. with a smile, she threw on some appropriate clothing, grabbing her coloring book and crayon off the floor and running out of her dorm. now, just to figure out what to do with her time.
you'd think that she'd be scared after the attack happened, seeing as she had to hear every little scraping of a knife, every scream that came out of every victims mouth.. but she tried not to think about it. it was hard, because she often found herself thinking about how different everyone would be acting if it hadn't happened. maybe everyone would be more cheerful.. less scared to go out and do something. everyone had that fear instilled in them now, because now they didn't know what could happen. even though abi saw the two be taken down by police, she was still scared that something like that could happen again. she shook the thoughts from her mind and looked around at where she was. she hadn't really been around this part of the school all that much, because it never really interested her, but she could work with it. she moved to the green grass and laid on her stomach, opening up her coloring book and crayons once more, working on finishing the picture of a princess that she was coloring in.
well, this wasn't much different from what she was doing in her room.. that kind of sucked. she pulled herself out of her world of coloring and looked around her, trying to find something else to do. she needed to take a break from coloring. that's when she found a boy sitting there, well... doing nothing. she didn't know how long he had been there, or why she didn't notice him before. with a smile on her face, she picked herself up from the ground and wiped off any grass that got on her dress. picking up her things, she walked over to the boy and took in front of him, waving, "hiii, i'm abi," she said in a childlike voice, before continuing, "what's your name?" she needed to meet knew people.

WHERE WAS I WHEN THE ROCKETS CAME TO LIFEAND CARRIED YOU AWAY INTO THE ALLIGATOR SKY?EVEN THOUGH I'LL NEVER KNOW WHATS UP AHEADI'M NEVER LETTIN' GO, I'M NEVER LETTIN' GO Meeting new people just wasn’t Topher’s cup of tea, usually he just had to wait for someone to come up to him and introduce themselves and basically make all the effort. The problem was that nobody ever came up and introduced themselves! Little did Topher realize that being six feet six inches tall was rather intimidating and it didn’t really help that the dead look in his eyes weren’t very welcoming. It’s not as if he meant to appear that way. The problem was he didn’t really know how to not come off as a scary giant. Maybe if he could actually show more emotion other than the confusion that occasionally flickers in his eyes then he’d make more friends…
However since Topher didn’t know how to make friends and nobody was really making a beeline to sit next to him at lunch or chat with him he stuck to his usual habits. One of those usual habits being sitting outside for hours on end and just looking around and occasionally watching people, he figured if he could just look at the people maybe he could pick up on the reason why they acted they way they did. The simple things he understood. When a group of people laughed they thought something was funny. When people were yelling harshly they were fighting. When people were talking loudly, but not as harshly they were usually just being friends. Topher thought this was progress that he could actually tell these things, but really compared to everything else he needed to figure out it was miniscule.
One thing that Topher didn’t understand is why people came up to him. Sure he wished that they would, but he couldn’t understand the appeal. The other day at lunch when that Cassie girl that didn’t like to eat sat with him Topher didn’t understand why she would do that. She would talk really fast and ask a lot of questions and tell him that he needed to see the snow. It all went too fast for Topher and still he couldn’t figure out if she would be called a friend or not…
When a childlike voice started talking to him Topher was confused. It was the kind of voice that reminded him of his little brother Jude, but Jude was too young to be at Hawthorne therefore someone that sounded like him couldn’t be there right… When he looked over to see who was talking to him it was a girl, younger than him for sure, with reddish hair and a coloring book. Topher actually liked coloring, it was part of his therapy actually because when he had a hard time with words the therapists would sometimes ask him to draw it out and it always helped.
Hello Topher said automatically in his emotionless voice. Simple conversation was one of the first things that Topher learned. It is nice to meet you Abi Topher said when she introduced herself, then he took the next step which was introducing himself. My name is Topher he said and from here he was always not sure what to do next. Usually people ask questions when they don’t know each other but Topher never really knew the right questions to ask. Taking a leap of faith Topher pointed at her coloring book and said Do you like coloring?
