Mikaela had her sunglasses on as she made her way to the cafe she was told to meet her son at. She got there early, the sun seemed like her worst enemy right now. It was just so unbelievably bright or had it always been that way?
She felt horrible of course, having been sober for just over a day. It was more than she'd usually do but she did say she was going to try. THe problem was, the withdrawel symptoms were a bitch to deal with and she always got them pretty bad. She had taken a bunch of asprin but it still didn't seem to help very much.
Getting to the cafe, she found a seat, ordered a coffee straight away because she needed it. She sipped it slow, the sunglasses still on, just hating the world right now because everything was emensely clearer and she didn't like what she saw. Being drunk or high was so much easier. everything was just dull and numb but obviously that wasn't a good way to go. She knew that Nate probably hated her but he did say she had one last chance and she wasn't going to screw that up so she sat quietly and waited.

• • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • today was judgement day. you know that feeling you get when your nerves just make you want to get sick? well, that was how joe was feeling at the moment, though he didn't let it show because he didn't want nate to worry about him. no he just let this effect him and let it be hidden. sure he was uneasy he was meeting the mom...who he already met and first spilled his guts to about liking someone named nate who just happened to be her son. they parked the car in one of the lots and they had to walk a little bit because this was the town circle and while there were streets and such he didn't want to park on one, because honestly half the people's driving her made him nervous. though new york had been completely different. yeah, he was from the good ol' state of new york! he should know how to drive within the insanity right? wrong! driving there was something he wouldn't do that often, because it angered him. the car was locked up and the young blonde and him were on there way to kind of meet joe's fate and the fate of kiki.
his hand were shoved into his blue jeans and he began to whistle a little bit until he saw the cafe of course in his sights. he smiled over at nate. "at anytime if you want to leave whistle that tune." he joked kind of needing to just a bit but so the boy would know they really could leave at any given point he wanted, because he didn't want him to feel like he had to stick around if he didn't want to. "here it goes." he said opening the door for nate. he walked in slowly behind him as not to kind of ruin the moment the boy was here for his mother and the mother was here for the boy, but she was on her last chance so he just kind of took the back road for now and let it be about her and nate. though he was sure it would possibly end up being about him and nate with time to come. what mother wouldn't be skeptical of a guy like him? did she even need to know that he was the coach?
the dark haired brunette was sitting there sunglasses still on and sipping on coffee. joe's hands returned to his pockets nervous behind nate. he didn't let him see that. he wouldn't because that was just how joe was. when they finally made it to the table which didn't take long but it seemed to be taking ages for joe he didn't say anything he waited for nate to speak. this was his deal not his joe didn't need to say a word to miss evans unless of course he was spoken directly too. kind of like nate when he first met him, but that was the point. sort of in a rather odd sort of way.

Nate didn't know what to expect but he certainly wasn't going to hope for much. He knew her too well. She might want to change but she never did. He wasn't going to expect her too this time, though of course it would be great if she succeeded.
Joe didn't have to come of course but Nate wouldn't lie, it would be nice having him there and it would certainly make him feel a whole lot better. So he was grateful Joe came along. Sure he had said 'you really don't have to' probably a hundred times but now but he was glad he did and he had thanked him for agreeing to anyway.
Nate just smiled when told to whistle if he wanted to leave. “And if I can't whistle?” he joked but the smirk gave him away. “thanks for doing this,” he said again before the approached the cafe.
He looked back at Joe before the got close enough for Kiki to spot them. “Don't freak out if she tries to hug me or something,” he told him, not wanting him to get angry because this was still his mother and he knew to expect it. “The alcohol makes her forget about the phobia sometimes,” he explained so as much as he hated it, he was used to it.
Joe was still behind him but that was okay. The guy was just kind of going along and waiting to see what happened which was fair. Nate needed to just go up to her and see what happens. When they finally got there, close enough for his mother to them, Nate braced himself for the inevitable.

Kiki sat there, sipping her coffee, hands shaking a little and a massive headache plaguing her. It just wouldn't go away but then this had happened before, this was why she never lasted long being sober. There were just too many bad things that came with it and it was always easier to just have a drink or smoke some weed and go back to it but she wanted to try. Nate had already said that this was it. It her very last chance and she didn't want to screw it up, but then she had already screwed up his life, what was the worst she could do?
Her eyes widened, under the sunglasses and she stood putting the cup down. “Hey baby,” she said with a smile. He was seventeen but he would always be her baby. She was reaching out to hug him but stopping before she actually touched him. She saw him flinch and immediately pulled her arms back to her side. “Oh, I'm sorry baby,” she said, she didnt mean to but at least she saw it this time. And at least this was proof of her sobriety.
She stood a little straighter, suddenly feeling like she was being judged before noticing the second pair of eyes on her. Her eyes widen. Joe from the car smoke fiasco? “Joe?” she asked, “What are you doing here?” she asked, looking between Joe and Nate for a few moments as she pulled off her sunglasses and placed them over her head to get a better look at them. Nate hadn't said a word about this at all..

• • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • well, there walk in was silent minus joe saying they could leave and if he whistled well that would be the sign. he smirked when he asked if he couldn't whistle what they would do then. well, if you really can not whistle just flat out say something i guess.. he said with a small chuckle. he had warned him not to freak out if he tried and hugged him, but chances were joe wouldn't take it lightly at all, but he didn't want nate to worry about that by any means so he just kind of nodded his head in a skeptical kind of agreement. kay" . they walked in and her eyes widened hopefully that was excitement or whatever and he heard her say hey baby and smile. she went into to hug him and then she remembered. joe would have said something given she hugged him not to be rude, but just to kind of get her to check herself before she went and did something like that again. nate had a phobia even as his mother you needed to respect that especially given that you were getting another chance...but then she stopped and he smiled just looking around not saying a word letting the moment play out a little bit..
the second pair of eyes did belong to joe and he was slightly judging her, because he knew about what she wanted and he wanted to make sure this was reality. "hello kiki" he said surprised by her remembering him. then it just got awkward, but he didn't want to lie to the woman, because he had already in fact told her what uh was going on. about how he felt about the guy named nate. standing in front of her was her son..he just when he found out he couldn't tell her..there that would have been weird. "i'm here for support" he confessed figuring it would explain a little bit he would let that sink in before he said anymore...

“Right, I'll just say I wanna leave then, shall I?” Nate joked. He could whistle it was all good but he was sure it would be alright. He would sit through this just this one last time and hope for the best. At least it was starting well with a few jokes between him and Joe, nothing too bad yet so it was fine.. But he was sure the rest would be alright too, he could handle this.. He could.. right? Yeah.. yeah he could.. He just kept telling himself that.
He knew Joe could be protective. He wasn't an idiot, he noticed how the guy was about with him and it was great. No one had ever been like that, not even the few friends he did have every now and then. Maybe he just hadn't met the right people but either way Joe was great, amazing even with the way he'd do things like tell Summer and them to leave him alone. It was nice, he liked it. It was like having his own personal bodyguard, one that he liked being around.
Nate almost flinched when she came at him but he didn't feel anything! He turned back and looked at her eyes wide with surprise. She had stopped.. what the hell? He took a closer look and saw the signs. She was trying to stay sober again. He didn't know how long this would last but he did say he'd give her a chance and so far she hadn't screwed it up in the first five seconds. That was surprising.
Nate watched her considering Joe and his being there. He knew that she had met him so that was okay and after a moment he spoke up. “We should probably just sit down,” he suggested, touching Joe's arm lightly to move him around the side to the chair next to his. Yeah, touching his arm because he was definitely getting better!

Kiki caught herself before even invading her son's personal space which was great. He looked surprised but she just smiled at him, reassuringly? Well, that was what she was going for and he seemed to consider this for a second before accepting it. Well, that was better than him deciding to leave as soon as she spoke.
It was odd seeing Joe there. She hadn't expected to but he was and he was with Nate, clearly, and that was odd too! She had no idea that they even knew each other so she looked between them for a moment just considering it but the way Joe was looking at her was distracting. He was judging her, she knew that look well.
She asked why he was here but she was slowly trying to put the pieces together as well. It took a moment to put the pieces together because Nate was her baby, she just saw him as that and Joe did talk about a Nate that he was with and she couldn't believe it. She had no idea her son was even attracted to men.. Well, he never showed any interest either way but it was still surprising to say the least.
“Are you two..?” she didn't finish that sentence but she had her sunglasses on the table, looking at them properly, hands on her hips, looking like she actually was a mother. It was strange but she pulled it off quite well when sober. She was concerned too though. Some men that she had dated.. Well.. things happened that she was vaguely aware of but it was reason enough for her to not like her son around any guy older than him because of that but he seemed okay. Nate wasn't smiling or anything but that was probably because she was there so she couldn't know for sure about this.
Then she saw something very weirder. Nate touched his arm as he spoke. “Oh,” she said, shocked by that before sitting down without a word, just being terrible confused and uncertain about all of this.

• • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • "Right, they are like the magic words to get you out of the situation, though I'm sure you'll be too nice to say them so if I see that you uneasy...then I'll just suggest it myself." he said well aware that Nate probably wouldn't flat out just speak up and say he wanted to leave directly in front of his mother. Joe well, he liked her but he didn't he thought it was noble of Nate to be giving her another shot, because of all the things she had put him through. If it weren't for her then this disorder would really be nothing at all. He wouldn't have a fear of people touching him and he wouldn't have known what it was like to clean blood out of a carpet. There was a lot more batting against the lady then there was going for her, but that was his opinion, but hopefully she would be different hopefully she really was going to do good with her babies last chance. Sometimes some people could pull things around.
Yeah, there was no way the fact that this lady was related by blood that Joe was not going to hold his own against her and make sure Nate wasn't fine. He was his boy. This was a special kind of relationship. One of those things you wanted to settle down for. Though if someone hit the wrong button no one would be settling. Joe stood at six three towering slightly over the two individuals. It was odd seeing Kiki again, but that vibe was strong from the both of them so he kind of just stayed silent and didn't flat out say it was weird seeing you here. He already knew who she was from the moment he saw that picture of Nate that she had when he was younger. The boy looked scared...he didn't like that picture he liked the picture of Nate feeling comfy and he well liked painting that atmosphere for him. He watched as the boy flinched but then all seemed to stop.
Then suddenly he felt her eyes judging him a little only because she was trying to figure out what the hell was really going on. He couldn't say he blamed her though, because he really didn't blame her, but he couldn't help but note it. Her behavior was surprising and he was a surprise for her so it was all kind of meshing out. Then the lady asked if they were. He didn't really figure it was his place to say much but then it was. Her hands were on her hips and she was looking over the two of them. Yes, he was older. Yes, Nate was younger and her son, but that didn't change Joe's feelings for him. Age was nothing but a number to him right now. Sure, it could cause trouble, but well Nate was well worth it to him or else he wouldn't have came to meet his mother with him considering she could get him in the most trouble of all. "Are we what?" he asked for clarification in a rather nice tone. He didn't need to answer broken questions.
The suggestion was they sit down and Nate's fingers brushed Joe's skin causing him to smile just slightly he loved it when Nate touched him even if it was just brushing him over with his finger tips. "Yeah good thinking." he said taking the seat next to Nate of course. That was where the two of them both felt comfy next to each other. He heard the oh, but kind of ignored it. It was what it was her son was okay with touching him. It was progress if she didn't see that then it was her problem really, but he wasn't trying to be mean or anything of the sort.

Joe was talking about someone named Nate and well, the pieces did fit. Being sober just made it soo much easier to figure out. Joe could very easily have been talking about her son and the fact that they were both here.. Well, that was no random coincidence!
So then the question now was.. What does she think about all of this? This was her baby but then he was growing up and she had to know and except that. It just wasn't easy to do at a moment's notice. She was still processing all that information and trying to make sense of that.
Age wasn't exactly the issue here. Hello, Kiki liked younger males so really what was a few years between Nate and Joe. That wasn't what bothered her. It was just the fact that this was a surprised. She hadn't seen this coming at all. Her baby didn't even date at all and now suddenly he was here and with guy. It was just so strange.
How did he even know Nate? How did they meet? There were so many questions she wanted to asked but then Joe spoke. “Nothing, never mind,” she said, not wanting to say it out loud since she had already figured it out herself. “How did you two meet?” she asked, the curiosity finally getting to her before sitting back down.

“Okay,” he said, that sounded good. Joe could suggest leaving and then it would be up to him to either say yes or no to that. “I'm sure it'll be fine though,” he said having a strangely optimistic view of something he really hadn't been looking forward to but now that he was actually here, why not just go along with it?
Still, it was progress, not just for him but for her as well. She was definitely sober right now, the question was, could she stay that way? Nate honestly didn't have an answer for that. He just couldn't be sure of it.
She seemed to make the connection between Joe and him so Nate said nothing, not wanting to add to much to it. She could just ask if she really wanted to know what was going on or if she couldn't figure it out on her own but she seemed to put the pieces together.
Then she asked and Nate kind of looked at Joe. Saying he was a teacher at the school might not go down so well because it really wasn't allowed and his mom knew that, but then they couldn't lie either but he just left it to Joe to say something because he didn't know what to say.

• • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • The pieces of the puzzle seemed to fall into place for his mother that kind of seemed to be having a kind of hard time wrapping her brain around this. He didn't blame her. He son had a phobia and well it wasn't exactly normal for someone with a touching phobia to have a boyfriend. Though this wasn't really about the relationship presented to her though he knew she was trying to be a mother this was about Nate and he couldn't help but feel like she was focusing more on him. She hadn't even asked Nate how he was how school was or anything like that and that made him kind of irked?
The woman asked them how they met and Joe kind of knew it was going to be something difficult for her to grasp, but he had nothing to hide. "Nate and I met at Hawthorne." he wasn't hiding anything he was just being honest really. Sure this was a surprise, but none the less this was about Nate. They could talk more about this later and Joe wasn't trying to hide anything he was just kind of going to hint about that. "You two want something you know sense its been awhile can enjoy some coffee or something some food my treat" he putting it in a subtle hint not sure if she would pick up on it or not, but his effort would not go unnoticed to at least him that much was evident.

Nate was pretty happy with how things were going. He never thought he'd be with someone like Joe or even just a guy in general considering everything that's happened to him but Joe was great. The guy was easy to talk to and easy to be around. It was good that it was him and not anyone else but then it wasn't as though it really could have been anyone else. Even when he was at the school before and barely talked to anyone, Joe seemed nice.
His mother seemed curious though, even concerned which was rare but Nate did take note of it. She was trying to change and when she was sober, she really did seem alright. She at least was aware he existed and that was really all he ever wanted, to not be ignored and he was certainly getting that now. Her attention was on Joe but with the way she was looking at him, he knew what she was thinking. She had done it once before when she was trying to be sober again and look at her boyfriend at the time, wondering why Nate looked so damn scared around him but then Joe spoke and said they met at hawthorne and Nate just had to add to it. His mother wasn't the best person in the world but she wasn't an idiot. Joe was obviously not a student or anything. “He's the coach at school,” he told her.
He watched her though, biting his lip as he did so, just wanting to see what she would say. Alcoholic or not this was still his mother and he did still want her to be okay with this. Even if he did hate her sometimes it never lasted long. Besides, it wasn't all miserable. On the better days, they had fun sometimes and it wasn't so bad. “Hot chocolate?” Nate asked Joe when he offered to get them something. It wasn't something he would have done before but he was getting better and not just with the phobia.
His mother did seem to be getting better too which was good, he just wasn't sure how long it would last but Nate found he was starting to be a little more optimistic than he had been before.

It was just concerned that caused her to focus on Joe. She had a bad reputation for letting her ex-boyfriends come over and most of them weren't really the sort of guys you'd want around your kid and of course Joe seemed nice and all but in her sober state it made sense to be concerned and worried and afraid of making the same mistakes again.
Hawthorne, well if he had been a student there she might have had a bit of a problem but Joe was older and thus probably a teacher or staff member and that did ring a few alarm bells for her. She just didn't want some random strange guy taking advantage of her baby but with Nate you could tell, if you paid attention, whether he was fine around a person or if he didn't like being there. Mikaela was no expert in her perpetually drunk state but right now she could tell that Joe was probably alright, Nate's phobia seemed to be going away at least so maybe that school really was helping him or maybe it was Joe..
Nate spoke though, clarifying things for her. The coach? Well Nate's never been interested in sports as far as she knew so it was kind of odd but then.. She supposed it wasn't too bad. It wasn't like Joe was a lot older than her son or anything and she'd be a hypocrite if she brought up the whole age thing so she didn't. She just kept her eyes on Joe and nodded before looking back at Nate who seemed to look like he wanted her approval even though they never had the best of relationships. Kiki gave him a weak smile. “At least you're happy,” she said, well he seemed happier so that was good.
Nate asked Joe for a hot chocolate when he offered and even that was something new. Nate never asked for anything.. He was starting to seem so much like just another normal kid and this surprised her but it was a good thing. “I'm fine,” she said, not needing anything since she already had her coffee, and watched Joe go. “You are happy aren't you?” she asked, leaning forward to look at her son for a second. Nate just smiled and nodded and Kiki mirror that nod in acceptance and sat back.

• • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • Too be honest, Joe never saw himself with another guy, but with Nate well the innocent look and just his person he was drawn to him oddly. He felt like just keeping him all to himself and it was selfish and recently he kind of had been keeping him at his home and well it was selfish really, but he loved being around him and making sure he was safe after he got hurt it brought Joe more drawn to him. He was around him everyday at the hospital making sure everything went well. It was odd behavior for just a student-teacher relation, but it was much more then that to him. His feelings were that of a crush, but more in a weird way. It was one of those things that were kind of hard to put into words which meant that it was more real to him then anything he'd felt in previous relations. Though, he was sure he was kind of boring more recently for a twenty-four year old and needed to kind of spice up Nate's relations with him. Nice was good but it was his first relationship he was assuming...things were all new and Joe being that of the one with experience wanted to take him into new area's he would thoroughly enjoy.
Maybe, he slightly was over jumping his bounds by kind of pushing at Nate, because the woman was just showing concern for her son. That was a great motherly like quality to have. Joe would never hurt Nate she didn't have to fear that, but he could and couldn't blame her by trying to put the pieces together he was just kind of nervous in a sense to, because she was judging him as well. She could easily put a end to him and Nate by calling the school and telling them so yeah he forgot to add the detail that he was the coach, but Nate added it for him and he watched her expression it wasn't so bad which made him relax in his seat a bit. She asked if he was happy and he said that he was so it kind of made him happy this was going good for him, but he wanted it to go better for Nate and her so when he said he wanted a hot chocolate he excused himself.
"One hot chocolate and.." he looked over at the cup. ..and whatever this miss over there previously ordered." he said nodding to Mikaela. He wasn't trying to kiss up or anything he was just ordering more so that they had a slight bit more time together then just one drink. Though it wasn't long at all before he brought the drinks back and smile. "One hot chocolate for you and...the guy remembered what you were drinking...I just figured maybe you'd like a refill or something" he said trying to be polite and smiled. The table went quite or so he thought he wasn't really sure what they'd been talking about before, but well if it remained he might start asking questions you know just to bring about convo.

This whole thing with Joe, it was great but it was the last thing he had ever thought would happen. In truth, Nate never thought he would ever find someone he'd want to be in a relationship with. The phobia was something that he barely wanted to deal with let alone make someone else have to deal with. It wasn't fair to Joe, but he seemed just fine, in fact he was actually helping to make it go away which was another thing that Nate never thought would happen.
So Nate never thought he would ever be in any kind of a relationship, if that was what this was. They hadn't really talked about it yet but it was on the agenda and Nate would get to that in time if it didn't come up before then. For now, he just had to get through this meeting with his mother. She seemed find though.
It was true that his mom could easily put an end to this. It would have been easier to avoid letting her know that Joe was the coach but then she would figure it out pretty easily anyway. So yeah he told her but he knew she wouldn't say anything. She owed him after all and she knew it too and nate knew her well enough to know that even if she was against it, she'd let it be known to him and maybe even Joe but she'd never go beyond that so he knew she would never tell the school about this. He was certain of it.
While Joe was gone to get the drinks, Nate talked to his mom a little, or at least enough for her to know that this wasn't going to end anytime soon and that this was definitely her last chance. She knew that though and she did seem to want to chance which was all well and good but Nate wouldn't believe that until he saw it and at this point, only time would tell.
“Thanks,” he said with a smile when Joe got back with his hot chocolate. Nate didn't exactly drink coffee so it seemed like a good choice. He was being all nice to his mom which was great too he supposed. The woman seemed quieter than usual but that wasn't necessarily a bad thing. He quietly sipped his drink.
