Kiki knew that she wasn't in a position to judge anyone. She hadn't done a great job or anything but she was sober now and was capable of acting a little more like a mother than she usually did. So yes, she did look at Joe, trying to figure him out. He was a teacher, she just wanted to make sure that he wasn't taking advantage of her son or anything. Just getting him to try him then using him or whatever.. She knew how that worked. It used to happen to her all the time so why not Nate too? He seemed to trust people so easily and sure that trust might falter if they turned out to be bad but he had a tendency to forgive pretty easily, only it seemed with her, she was running out of that.
Still, Joe did seem nice enough but the whole teacher thing gave her some doubts. When ever it was someone with power or an authority figure of some kind, things tended to get complicated. It was never really fair at least in her experience so yes, of course he was concerned. Nate did seem happier and better than he used to be, she couldn't deny that.
Joe disappeared to get the drinks and Kiki just talked to Nate for a while. He reiterated the fact that this was in fact her last chance. If she screwed up there was no going back, no chance to re-do it. It was fair though, he was getting older and Nate was incredibly smart, she knew that and he was independent too so he probably didn't even need his mom around anymore but she didn't want to lose him or anything so she would try.
Joe came back and he gave her a drink too which was great since she was done with hers and she could use another anyway to deal with all of this. It was a lot to talk in. “Thank you Joe,” she said politely, taking the drink. She stared down at it for a second, the conversation going quiet. “So,” she said, looking back up at Nate then Joe then kind of just switching between them. “You're living together?” she asked, having just recently heard about this. Nate already mentioned getting her to let the school know that it would be okay and she hadn't told him if she would since Joe came back before she could answer but Nate wouldn't ask again anyway.

when he came back he had set the drink in front of nate and set the drinks in front of them. they thanked him and he sat back for a moment studying nate and her they looked alright and like they didn’t do too bad, but he hadn’t been gone for long enough so he just kind of felt bad for not giving them more time. then that question played out of her lips and he well he wasn’t going to lie to her. he smiled at her and nodded. ”yeah, hawthorne well isn’t the safest place and i care about nate a lot and i don’t want him getting hurt.” he said being honest. ”plus he’s such a pleasure to live with” he said blushing a little bit. what else could he say to that really he was nervous.
”is that okay?” he asked her kind of wanting her opinion on it, because she was rather silent and well. he didn’t want to be the only one talking and the fact that nate wasn’t saying much either was kind of making him curious. had he nothing to say really? why did they come and why was he giving her another chance if he had nothing more to say to her? that made him nervous. did he ever really want to even give her this chance or was he just doing it because he felt bad? those were the things running through joe’s mind right now.

Nate didn't need more time with his mother. He had spent a lifetime with the woman already and that was more than enough for him. She would be concerned and he had expected that much but he didn't really feel like answering her questions, especially since things were never really clearly stated between him and Joe. It just was what it was so he didn't feel the need to put that into words. Joe could probably explain better than he could. Nate had never been good with words anyway, at least the spoken kind.
Nate smiled when Joe answered the question. It was nice to hear things like that, especially when you're used to been neglected and unwanted all your life, it was just great to hear that someone actually wanted you around. It felt good and joe was great at that. He was great at just making him happy.
Nate glanced up and saw the look on his mother's face. The smile faded just slightly and then Joe asked if it was okay. His mother seemed to go silent for a moment so Nate took the chance to speak.
“Of course it is,” he said looking at his mother, and speaking with a certainty and confidence that he rarely showed. She even seemed to snap out of her thoughts at the confident tone of his voice.
Nate had already spoken to her about this and she wasn't going to no. Not if she wanted what's best for him. She was already trying to make the right decisions and always failing every single time so now it was his turn to make his own decisions.

It was hard for the woman to wrap her head around the idea. It was men that had hurt her baby. She was aware of that much at least, she never really cared to know the details but then Kiki had never been good at handling such serious matters. She would only get depressed and blame her fault and that wouldn't help anybody. Still, this seemed odd to her.. He didn't like people touching him.. Men had hurt him and here was a man that he was perfectly fine with! That made absolutely no sense to her at all but who was she to deny her son any of this. He seemed happy enough, or at least happier than he had ever been with her.. Why should she say anything against it? She had lost her right to so many years ago.
She knew her son wanted to be with this guy for whatever crazy reason? Maybe he brainwashed him? Who knows?! Those were some crazy conclusions to jump to but then what else was a mother suppose to do? Simply accept that her baby was going to live with some man she didn't even know?!
He had a point. The school didn't seem safe and.. Nate was a pleasure to live with? Well.. maybe she should have been aware of that. He was great to have around because he took care of things. It should have been her job but he had always done it and in a way she needed him but here was this guy taking her baby away from here and there he was, the blonde teenager, actually looking happier than he had ever been with her. She missed seeing that smile and for a second her brows furrowed in thought and she frowned for a moment. Not looking unhappy, just a little sad and remorseful.
Joe asked if it was okay and Kiki fell silent for a moment, just thinking about all of this. A million and one thoughts on her mind, all wondering if this was the right thing to do. She never knew what the right thing was when it came to being a mother so how should she know if this was the right thing for her baby? She didn't know what to say but then to her surprised her baby spoke up. 'Of course it is', he had said, and he said it with such confidence that she could only stare wide eyed and surprised at him. Her little baby boy sounded like an adult, making his own decisions and telling her how things were going to be! When did he grow up? Why wasn't she there to even notice?
He sounded a lot like his father. That quiet confidence and steely gaze like he could convince anyone that he was right, simply by looking at them that way... “Of course,” she said attempting a smile before sinking back in her seat. Had she lost her baby? Or was there a chance that they could reconcile?

living with your other wasn’t something joe would have done so quickly in any given situation. he just he liked his space, but this was perfect nate was constantly reading, teaching him about stars, or they were just enjoying one another’s company. being that he cared so much about him as well was like another big factor and well it had been just great. there was nothing to complain about and he was staying safe at his house. he wasn’t trying to take her baby away, because well he was the one that had mentioned kind of that this might be a good thing? wasn’t he? nate probably wouldn’t have showed. well, without the ride and the talk? he highly doubted it , but then their they were discussing their awesome home life. he wondered how that made his mother feel. he caught the smile and it made him feel great inside and obviously out cause his smile was gleaming as well. nate answered the question for his mother and then she pretty much choked out an of course at the living situation.
though, the boy was close enough to eighteen and well joe even if she said that it wasn’t okay wouldn’t have let him go back to that damn dorm. not that jacobi alexander was a bad roommate or anything like that it was just if he wandered about at night well...joe wouldn’t be able to sleep at night knowing that nate was at that school so it was better that he was staying with him and they could all rest easy. ”great” he finally replied and looked at the two of them and then down at his hands. what else did they really have to talk about the twenty-four year old male was not sure...
